Launch of National Cyber Drill 2025: Mauritius Doubles Down on Cybersecurity

Building Resilience and Trust in a Digital-First Economy
Ebene, Mauritius, Africa | 15 May 2025

Mauritius has strengthened its cybersecurity defences with the launch of the National Cyber Drill 2025 at the Caudan Arts Centre, reinforcing its commitment to a safer digital ecosystem. The event, inaugurated by Minister Dr Avinash Ramtohul alongside key public and private sector stakeholders, marks a major step in enhancing national cyber readiness.

The two-day drill, jointly organised by the Ministry of Information Technology, Communication and Innovation and CERT-MU, simulates real-world cyberattacks to test and improve operational response procedures across institutions. A major announcement during the event was the Threat Mitigation Knowledge Hub, a national cyber threat information-sharing platform.

In his address, Minister Ramtohul highlighted the importance of the “four pillars”: people, policies, processes and technology in building cyber resilience. He outlined ongoing efforts to formalise the Critical Information Infrastructure Framework and upgrade the Mauritius Cybercrime Online Reporting System (MAUCORS).

In 2024 alone, over 5,000 cyber incidents were reported, with threats increasingly targeting social media. By early 2025, another 1,000 cases including hacking, phishing, sextortion and malware attacks had already been registered.

Touching on the rise of Artificial Intelligence (AI), the Minister called for robust regulations to safeguard personal data and national assets, ensuring innovation and technological progress without compromising digital security.

Dr Kaleem Usmani, Officer-in-Charge of CERT-MU, underlined the need for proactive cyber risk management and institutional preparedness to face evolving digital threats.

What This Means for Expats, Businesses and the Econom

The National Cyber Drill 2025 signals Mauritius’ active approach to digital safety at a time when trust in cyber infrastructure is critical for economic and social progress. As the country accelerates its transformation into a regional innovation hub, such initiatives play a key role in:

  • Ensuring business continuity
  • Safeguarding personal and corporate data
  • Boosting investor confidence in the jurisdiction

This is especially relevant for expats, tech entrepreneurs and global investors seeking to operate in a digitally forward and secure environment.
