Mauritius and Emirates Strengthen Strategic Partnership in Air Connectivity and Tourism

Ebene, Mauritius, Africa | 04 July 2025

Mauritius continues to solidify its global partnerships with leading international players, as reflected in a high-level meeting this week between the Government of Mauritius and senior leadership from Emirates Airline. The delegation, led by Mr Sheikh Majid Al Mualla, Divisional Senior Vice-President of International Affairs at Emirates, paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam at the New Treasury Building in Port Louis.

The discussions aimed to explore new avenues to expand the strategic partnership between Mauritius and Emirates, particularly in the fields of air connectivity, tourism, and economic development.

A 23-Year Partnership Gaining New Momentum

Speaking after the meeting, Mr Adnan Kazim, Deputy President and Chief Commercial Officer of Emirates, described the exchange as cordial and fruitful. He noted that the 23-year collaboration between Mauritius and Dubai via Emirates continues to be a key driver of growth, especially for the island’s tourism economy.

Mr Kazim highlighted that the existing 15-year bilateral agreement has already facilitated close to 8.8 million passenger movements between the two destinations. Emirates now accounts for approximately 32% of total tourist arrivals in Mauritius, a major contribution to the country’s GDP and hospitality industry.

Boosting Demand for Premium Travel and Economic Growth

Mr Kazim further emphasized the rising demand for premium cabin seats on Emirates flights to Mauritius, driven by a surge in luxury tourism. This trend is expected to further support high-end hotels, generate employment, and inject greater value into the local economy. “We are contributing to more than USD 900 million in terms of direct and indirect investment,” he stated.

He added that Emirates is committed to deepening its footprint in Mauritius through an expanded set of initiatives that align with the Government’s economic and tourism objectives.

New Initiatives on the Horizon

As part of the ongoing collaboration, Emirates will sign several new agreements aimed at strengthening this strategic relationship:

  • A five-year extension of its agreement with Air Mauritius, ensuring long-term connectivity between key destinations.
  • The opening of a new Emirates retail outlet in Mauritius to provide upgraded services for local customers.
  • A formal partnership with the Mauritius Tourism Promotion Authority (MTPA) to boost inbound tourism and international visibility.

These new developments are designed to further reinforce Mauritius’ position as a premium travel destination while creating tangible socio-economic benefits across the island.
