Mauritius and Tanzania: A New Chapter in Trade and Investment Relations
Exploring Regional Growth Opportunities Through Bilateral Cooperation
Ebene, Mauritius, Africa | 25 April 2025
Mauritius and Tanzania are taking promising steps toward deepening their economic partnership, as reflected in recent engagements between the Economic Development Board (EDB) of Mauritius and the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC). These efforts underscore the shared ambition to consolidate bilateral trade and investment ties and unlock new opportunities for growth across sectors.
Strengthening Regional Economic Bridges
In December 2024, Mr. Gilead Teri, Executive Director of the Tanzania Investment Centre (TIC), paid a courtesy visit to the EDB. The meeting was a pivotal moment to reinforce institutional collaboration and reaffirm mutual goals of economic growth, regional integration and sustainable development.
During the exchange, the EDB provided an overview of Mauritius’ diversified economy—highlighting key sectors such as financial services, real estate, manufacturing, ICT/BPO and the ocean economy. Discussions also explored how Mauritius can help bridge the continent’s infrastructure financing gap and support pan-African investment momentum.
As part of the outcome, the TIC extended an invitation to the EDB to coordinate a private-sector delegation to Tanzania in 2025, led by a Mauritian government representative. This move is expected to catalyse stronger business-to-business ties.
Mauritius as a Platform for Regional Expansion
With its stable and investor-friendly environment, Mauritius is well-positioned as a strategic platform for African businesses seeking regional and global access. Likewise, Tanzania, with its expanding infrastructure and rich resource base, offers fertile ground for Mauritian investment in sectors such as agriculture, energy, healthcare and manufacturing.
Success stories such as Alteo’s acquisition of TPC Sugar Estate, MCFI’s long-term fertiliser exports and MUA’s expansion through Phoenix of Tanzania illustrate the potential of bilateral cooperation.
