Mauritius and India Strengthen Bilateral Ties with Key Agreements

New Opportunities for Economic Growth and Expansion

Ebene, Mauritius, Africa | 09 April 2025

Mauritius and India have cemented their strong diplomatic and economic relationship with the signing of eight key Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) during a high-profile state visit by Indian Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi. The agreements spanning a wide range of sectors, were officially exchanged in the presence of Mauritius’ Prime Minister, Dr Navinchandra Ramgoolam, at the Sir Harilal Vaghjee Memorial Hall in Port Louis on 12 March 2025.

A Renewed Commitment to Partnership

Prime Minister Modi, who was the Chief Guest at Mauritius’ National Day celebrations, emphasised the deep historical and cultural ties between the two nations. He reaffirmed India’s steadfast support for Mauritius across pivotal sectors, including transportation, justice, social housing, health, trade and tourism.

One of the key takeaways from the visit was the decision to elevate Indo-Mauritian relations to an enhanced strategic partnership. This milestone paves the way for collaboration in cutting-edge areas such as space research, artificial intelligence, digital health, FinTech and cybersecurity.

Prime Minister Ramgoolam echoed these sentiments, expressing profound appreciation for India’s role in Mauritius’ socioeconomic development and its advocacy for Mauritius’ sovereignty on international platforms, particularly regarding the Chagos Archipelago.

Key Agreements Signed

The MoUs formalised during this visit cover essential areas, highlighting the shared commitment to mutual progress. These agreements include:

  • Cooperation between the Financial Crimes Commission (Mauritius) and the Central Bureau of Investigation (India) to strengthen financial crime investigations.
  • A technical agreement between the Indian Navy and the Mauritius Police Force for maritime traffic monitoring.
  • A credit facility agreement with the State Bank of India to finance the Pipe Replacement Programme.
  • An MoU between the Ministries of Industry of both countries to support micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSMEs).
  • A cooperation framework between the Sushma Swaraj Institute of Foreign Service and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Mauritius.

Additionally, the leaders inaugurated the Area Health Centre of Cap Malheureux and 20 small development projects, all funded by the Indian Government, reflecting the people-centric approach of the partnership.
