Mauritius Takes Bold Steps Towards Sustainability

A Call for Recycling and Responsible Consumption

Ebene, Mauritius, Africa | 22 April 2025

On 18 March 2025, the Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, Hon. Rajesh Anand Bhagwan, urged the population of Mauritius to adopt a more sustainable lifestyle by prioritising recycling and reducing waste. The Minister delivered his speech during an official ceremony at Plastic Industry Mauritius (PIM) Ltd in Port-Louis in observance of Global Recycling Day.

The Global Push for Sustainable Practices

Hon. Minister Bhagwan highlighted the global plastic pollution crisis, with 14 million metric tonnes entering the oceans each year, affecting ecosystems and economies. The stakes are equally high for Mauritius which generates 539,086 tonnes of waste annually, underscoring the urgent need for changes in consumption and waste management.

Despite nearly half of Mauritius’ waste being recyclable, the country’s recycling rate remains alarmingly low, with only 3% of plastic waste recycled. This highlights the need for a comprehensive approach to waste management which the Government is addressing through various initiatives.

Government’s Vision for a Circular Economy

In response, Hon. Minister Bhagwan announced several initiatives aimed at steering Mauritius towards a circular economy. One such initiative is the introduction of the Plastic Management Committee, tasked with developing strategies to reduce plastic waste and promote recycling across the island.

A key priority of the Ministry is to instil a strong sense of environmental responsibility in younger generations through education and awareness campaigns, with the aim of fostering long-term sustainable behaviours.

Industry’s Role in Waste Management and Recycling

At the ceremony, Mrs. Joanna Marie Bérenger, Junior Minister of Environment, Solid Waste Management and Climate Change, unveiled plans for a waste sorting system designed to enhance recycling efficiency and reduce environmental impact.

Mr. Eric Corson, Managing Director of PIM Ltd, discussed the company’s vision of transforming recycling from a challenge into an opportunity. PIM Ltd’s focus on creating green jobs and developing local skills is central to building a more sustainable future, both economically and environmentally.
