Prime Minister outlines vision to position Mauritius as a leading healthcare hub in Africa
Ebene, Mauritius, Africa | 18 June 2025
Mauritius is accelerating the transformation of its healthcare sector, with a renewed focus on medical professionalism, cutting-edge clinical practices, and the adoption of high-tech technologies to establish itself as a leading healthcare hub in Africa.
A Vision for Advanced Surgical Excellence and Medical Innovation
This national ambition was outlined by the Prime Minister, Dr. Navinchandra Ramgoolam, during the official launch of the MISA–AMASI Conference held at Hilton Mauritius Resort & Spa in Flic en Flac. The landmark event, co-organised by the Minimally Invasive Surgery Association (MISA) and the Association of Minimal Access Surgeons of India (AMASI), convened world-leading surgeons, clinical researchers, and healthcare professionals to explore the latest frontiers in minimally invasive surgery (MIS).
High-profile attendees included the Minister of Health and Wellness, Hon. Anil Kumar Bachoo; Minister of Tertiary Education, Science and Research, Dr. Kaviraj Sharma Sukon; Junior Minister of Finance, Mr. Dhaneshwar Damry; Members of Parliament Dr. Farhad Ismael Aumeer and Dr. Sandeep Prayag; Patron of Laparoscopic Surgery in India, Dr. Chinnusamy Palanivelu; AMASI President, Dr. Kalpesh Jani; and Conference Organising Secretary, Dr. Pravish Sookha.
Strengthening Mauritius’ Position as a Medical Leader
In his keynote address, Prime Minister Ramgoolam paid tribute to the contributions of Mauritian and international healthcare professionals, stating: “It is a privilege to have our doctors trained by AMASI, an esteemed institution shaping the path toward a stronger, more advanced healthcare system.”
He welcomed Dr. Palanivelu’s proposal to introduce advanced surgical training programmes in Mauritius and highlighted the potential for collaboration with India to map out a national strategy for the integration of robotic surgery—described as the “next frontier” of medical advancement.
Dr. Ramgoolam also emphasized the importance of continuous training, ethical medical practice, and vigilance in clinical care. He noted the paradox of significant healthcare investment—approximately Rs 17 billion annually—against ongoing systemic challenges such as long waiting times, inefficiencies, and a recent decline in life expectancy from 74.5 to 73.5 years. The rise in non-communicable disease-related deaths by 20% was also flagged as an urgent concern.
Driving Research, Education and Technological Integration
To address these challenges, the Prime Minister called for:
- Enhanced clinical research and academic medical programmes
- Improved access to international medical education for Mauritian students
- Adoption of smart technologies to modernise hospitals and clinical practices
- Stronger partnerships with international centres of excellence in surgery and innovation
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to positioning Mauritius as a regional medical training and healthcare destination.
Institutional Partnerships in Action
Minister Anil Kumar Bachoo praised the long-standing partnership between MISA and AMASI, which has helped anchor minimally invasive techniques within the national health system since their introduction in the mid-1900s. With over 200 laparoscopic procedures performed already in 2025, he underscored the importance of sustained professional training and the integration of modern technologies.
